2. Gene flow (formerly known as migration). Immigrating organisms can bring new alleles into a population. Emigrating animals can remove their alleles from a small population.

4. Selection. Alleles for traits that provide their owners with better "fitness" for the local environment or local population may increase in frequency in the population. Alleles for traits that decrease the fitness of their owners may decrease in the population.
